Website Features / Screech In Ceremony

The Screech In Ceremony is often performed to initiate non-Newfoundlanders (often referred to as "Come From Aways") into honorary Newfoundlanders or "honorary Newfoundlanders." This ceremony is especially common in bars and pubs, often as a fun tourist attraction.  Since the first ceremony over 250,000 CFA's have been Screeched In.

The ceremony typically involves the following elements:

Recitation: The participant is required to recite a Newfoundland phrase or passage, often containing some local dialect and unique phrases.

Tasting Screech: The participant takes a shot of Screech, a type of Newfoundland rum, known for its high alcohol content and strong taste.

Kissing the Cod: The participant may be asked to kiss a frozen codfish or a toy codfish as part of the tradition.

Certificate or Souvenir: After completing the ritual, the participant is usually presented with a certificate declaring them an honorary Newfoundlander, and they may receive other novelty souvenirs or memorabilia.

The Screech In Ceremony is more of a playful and humorous way to celebrate Newfoundland's culture and welcome newcomers, and it has become a popular and memorable experience for visitors to the province. Keep in mind that customs and practices might vary from one place to another, but this gives you a general idea of what it entails.

The "Screech In Ceremony" since its 1980 formal adoption, (it's roots predate confederation) has become immensely popular. One google search "Newfoundland Screech In" (select "images") that it has become  a right of passage for CFA's as well as a large number of famous and well know celebrities and politicians.

Our Screech In website was rebuilt in 2021. It started as a personal project and as a place where those CFA's who went through the
Screech In Ceremony for Honorary Newfoundlander  status could register and share their stories. Since then as requests came in we added other features and services as well as merchandise to support this website.

We also set up a companion website under www.honorarynewfoundlander.ca for anyone who missed purchasing an Honorary Newfoundlander t-shirt, hat or mug could do so.  A nd finally a Facebook page.

The old website gained alot of fans however  a few occurances  turned the tide for this fun project and it began to gain some momentum.   The "Come From Away" world wide broadway hit where the popular Screech In Ceremony was performed on a Broadway Stage. And in some ways the 2020 COVID lock-down, when people could only dream about travelling.

Over the years occassionally one of our EXPATS fellow Newfouundlanders would reach out and request a few certificates, souwesters, Screech (our provincial rum) and of course a cod  to perform a Screech In for a group of friends. One thing led to another and this new website is the result. A website for everyone.
